Late Goal, Stingy Defense Sinks Titans, 1-0

September 6, 2013

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Haley Haagsma's goal in the 62nd minute Friday stood up as the lone goal of the night, lifting host Texas Tech to the 1-0 shutout victory over Cal State Fullerton in front of 936 fans at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock, Texas.

The loss snapped a three-match unbeaten streak for the Titans, who fell to 2-2-1 overall on the season. The Red Raiders, who were upset in the final seconds last weekend by Long Beach State, improved to 4-1 overall on the season and will face their third consecutive Big West Conference opponent in Cal State Northridge on Sunday.

Haagsma's game-winner in the middle of the second half came off a rebound as Caity Heap's shot was deflected to Haagsma, who headed it home for her third goal of the year.

That was more than enough for the Texas Tech defense, which surrendered only three shots on the night while the Red Raider offense
took 14 of its own and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks on the night. Haagsma led all players with four shots on the night as 10
different players recorded shots for Texas Tech.

Senior Lindsey Maricic made five saves in net to keep the Titans in the match while Christina Burkenroad, Colleen Ortega, and Nikki McCants accounted for the team's shots. Fullerton was the more aggressive team, whistled for 15 fouls, including a pair of cards.

The Titans forced Red Raider goalkeeper Victora Esson to make just one save on the night as Ortega's blast was stopped just 53 seconds into the match. Burkenroad's shot in the 11th minute and McCants' attempt in the 69th minute both went wide.

Cal State Fullerton returns to Titan Stadium to open yet another three-match homestand beginning on Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. against Loyola Marymount. The Titans then welcome Utah State two days later for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday (Sept. 15).
