BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore midfielder Lisa Nouanesengsy scored in the first half to give the Hoosiers a lead but Michigan State (12-4, 5-3 Big Ten) scored the tying goal with two seconds left in regulation and then got the game-winner in the fourth minute of overtime to hand IU the 2-1 loss.

 

It was a very windy day at Armstrong Stadium, with the wind out of the west forcing a majority of the play to the east end of the field. The Hoosiers (6-9-1, 2-6 Big Ten) were attacking the east end in the first half and out-shot the Spartans, 9-3, in the first 45 minutes. They were able to break through for the game’s first goal at the 28:17 mark when Orianica Velasquez hit the cross bar with a shot from 25 yards out. The rebound came off in the middle of the box and Nouanesengsy pounced on it and put home her sixth goal of the season to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.

 

In the second half, Michigan State had the advantage with the wind and was on the attack for most of the half. The Hoosiers were able to mount one very good counter-attack with Carly Samp and Monica Melink. Samp carried the ball through the middle and found Melink on the left wing just inside the 18-yard box. Melink took a touch and sent a blast on goal that MSU keeper Jill Flietstra was able to save.

 

As the second half wound down, the Hoosiers were called for a foul 25 yard in front of the MSU goal. The Spartans quickly gathered the ball and sent it into the box and eventually into the back of the net with just two seconds remaining on the clock.

 

Then just over three minutes into the overtime session, Olivia Stander raced to the endline and found Hannah Peterson with a cross that Peterson drilled into the back of the net for the game-winner.

 

Lindsay Campbell made seven saves in the IU goal while Flietstra made three in the Michigan State goal.

 

Prior to the start of the game the six IU seniors – Devon Beach, Lindsay Campbell, Kaylin Clow, Kirsta Kellin, Kerri Krawczak and Carly Samp – were honored as part of the annual senior day festivities.

 

Indiana is back on the road to close out the regular season, travelling to Minnesota and Wisconsin next Friday and Sundy, respectively.
