Lehigh celebrates senior class at banquet

December 11, 2013

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's soccer team looked back at the 2013 season on Sunday (Dec. 8) at the team's annual banquet. Team awards were presented and the Mountain Hawks' six seniors were recognized for their contributions in the Brown and White. The senior class of Heather Camperson, Paige Dyrek, Katie Gavalchin, Murphee Greeley, Ali Griffin and Rosie Vitta won a Patriot League Championship as freshmen before returning to the league tournament as juniors.

For the second straight season, Athlete of the Year was presented to Greeley. The award is annually presented to the student-athlete who made the most outstanding athletic contributions to the accomplishments of the team. A three-time All-Patriot League honoree, Greeley finished the season with eight points (two goals, four assists) in 17 games (all starts). Greeley led the team with 42 shots, scoring her goals against Saint Mary's (Calif.) and Loyola, both victories. The Devon, Pa. native finished her career with 43 points behind 16 goals and 11 assists.

Sophomore Paige Elliott garnered Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, presented to a team member who demonstrates outstanding academic performance. Elliott owns a 4.0 cumulative grade point average as a Chemical Engineering major. On the field, she was named a preseason All-Patriot League honoree after earning First Team laurels as a freshman. Elliott struggled with injuries, but still finished 2013 with one goal in 12 games (four starts). She played in eight of the nine league games and scored her goal in a big 1-0 win at Army.

Senior Katie Gavalchin earned the Coaches Award, given to the team member who exemplifies outstanding work ethic, on and off the field. Gavalchin moved from midfield to defense this season and stepped up as an anchor in the back. She started all 17 games and made her presence felt, highlighted by Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors following a big win over Loyola.

Lehigh wrapped up its season with a 5-10-2 record, 3-6-0 in the Patriot League. Despite beginning 0-4-0 in league play, the Mountain Hawks won two of their next three games to jump right back into the playoff picture. Four of Lehigh's six league losses were by a single goal as a talented squad looks to bounce back in 2014.
