Lehigh drops 3-0 game at La Salle

September 21, 2013

PHILADEPHIA, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 game at La Salle on Saturday afternoon. The match was scoreless until the 75th minute when the Explorers were able to rattle off three goals within 11 minutes.

“We lost our way,” said head coach Dean Koski. “Sometimes in the game of soccer things unravel very quickly. We will have to visit the option of giving some other guys the opportunity to step up. This game will probably result in some substantial changes, and we need to find 11 players that are completely committed to winning.”

The first half began with an exchange of shots from both teams, none of which were on target. The first shot on goal came in the 18th minute when Lehigh’s James Meyerkord was able to put the ball on target, but La Salle’s goalkeeper John McCarthy made the save. Less than a minute later, Meyerkord fired off another shot that flew wide before taking Lehigh’s first corner kick of the game. La Salle recorded seven shots in the first half, but none were on target as Lehigh’s Kevin Motylewski finished the first half without needing to make a save. Lehigh’s defense held strong to end the first half at 0-0.

Five minutes into the second half, Mountain Hawk junior Brian Suchoski fired off a shot on goal but once again McCarthy was able to keep it out of harm’s way. In the 63rd minute, sophomore James Luchini also recorded a shot on goal that wasn’t able to find the back of the net. La Salle found its stride in the 75th minute when the Explorers’ Dan Caya was able to head a ball into the back of the net off a free kick. Five minutes later, La Salle struck again when Tom Baker was able to connect on a ball that was booted from midfield. The Explorers scored again in the 87th minute off a goal from Glenroy Chapman to secure the 3-0 victory.

Both Meyerkord and Luchini recorded three shots throughout the game. Lehigh finished the game with 10 shots, while La Salle recorded 16.

“Shane Mulcahy came off the bench for us and did better than anyone on the field today,” said Koski. “I’m very pleased with his efforts and commitment.”

The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to American to begin Patriot League play. The match is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
