Lehigh falls at Boston University , 1-0

October 12, 2013

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 match on the road to Patriot League newcomer Boston University this afternoon. In a game that proved to be a defensive battle between the two teams, the Terriers scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute.

“We gave up a goal due to a miscommunication about a pass back to our keeper,” said head coach Dean Koski. “We played hard. It’s frustrating for the team that we can’t seem to find that one goal that’s going to give us some life.”

The Mountain Hawks fired off the game’s first shot on goal in the eighth minute off the foot of freshman Danny Gonzalez, but Terriers’ keeper Matt Gilbert was able to make the save. Lehigh freshman keeper Jacob Gottwald made his first save in the 11th minute when Mac McGuire threated with a header shot on goal. The Terriers posed another threat in the 27th minute when a barrage of shots were fired off, but the Lehigh defense was able to block the shots and clear the field.

Junior Brian Suchoski answered by taking the ball to the other side of the field on a good scoring chance, but his shot flew wide. Boston University rifled off three shots and two corner kicks in the final three minutes of the first half, but none came to fruition as the game entered halftime scoreless.

Lehigh picked up momentum as the second half opened, taking three corner kicks within the first three minutes. The game proved to be a defensive battle as neither team got off a shot for long periods, including a 15-minute stretch leading up to the 70th-minute shot from BU’s David Asbjornsson that was blocked by the Lehigh defense.   The Terriers struck in the 75th minute when a ball from Gilbert connected with Lucas McBride who put the ball in the back of the net to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

Gonzalez tallied two shots for Lehigh, while five other players recorded one apiece. Gottwald record four saves in the match. Lehigh held an 8-6 corner kick advantage, while BU tallied 15 shots against Lehigh’s seven.

Next up for the Mountain Hawks is a trip to Philadelphia to face non-league foe Villanova on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
