Monmouth was the preseason pick to win the MAAC following a stellar 13-3-2 season in 2015. Goalkeeper Sydney Lavan also returns after starting all 18 games a season ago, posting a 0.94 goals against average and .764 save percentage. Monday will mark the second game for Monmouth in 2016 following a 3-1 loss at Bucknell Friday night. The Hawks' Gabriella Cuevas scored in the 22nd minute, but the Bison scored three second-half goals for the comeback victory.

Monmouth leads the all-time series with Lehigh, 9-3-2. Last season's 2-2 tie featured 50 combined shots, including 23 shots on goal as Lehigh took a 1-0 lead deep into the second half before Monmouth responded with two straight goals in a 5:34 span. Courtney converted an 82nd-minute free kick, to help force overtime. Lehigh's last win over Monmouth came in 2009 in double overtime. Monmouth responded by winning the next three before last season's tie.
