Lehigh picks up 1-1 draw at UMBC

September 18, 2017
BALTIMORE - Sophomore Maggie Wadsworth evened the score in the 75th minute, helping the Lehigh women's soccer team earn a 1-1 tie at UMBC Monday evening. The Mountain Hawks (5-2-2) finished with a dominant 26-6 edge in shots, but Retrievers' goalkeeper Leah Roth stopped eight-of-nine shots sent her way. Now 4-1-1 on the road this season, Lehigh had several glittering opportunities down the stretch, which included a shot that a UMBC defender cleared off the goal line in the final minute of regulation, and a shot that was deflected off the crossbar in the final two minutes of the second overtime. "It was a good midweek game," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "You could tell we only had one day rest. The good thing about it is we came back from going down and got the tying goal, which we were happy about. Sometimes, soccer is a game where you can do a lot of things right, but not put the ball in the back of the net. Tonight was one of those nights." Lehigh tallied 11 of the 12 first-half shots, but only two were on goal as Roth made saves in the 22nd and 31st minutes off shots from Wadsworth and seniorGrace Correll, helping keep the game scoreless. Just 1:42 into the second half, UMBC was tripped in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick as the Retrievers' first shot on goal gave them a 1-0 advantage in the 47th minute. The Mountain Hawks answered with the next five shots, with the fifth evening the score. From the left corner of the box, junior Clare Severe found Wadsworth in front of the net, who buried her second goal of the season at the 74:41 mark. The teams traded opportunities over the rest of regulation, each tallying four shots through the final 23 minutes of regulation. One was a great chance from sophomore Mary Casey in the 90th minute, but a UMBC defender following a corner kick, but a Retrievers' defender made a big save on the goal line. After neither team had a shot in the first overtime, the Mountain Hawks held a 5-0 edge in the second OT period. Their best chance came in the 109th minute as a shot from sophomore Kayla Arestivo near the top of the box was saved off the crossbar, then Severe's header on the rebound sailed just wide of the left post. "We struggled to put balls on frame in the first half, but we did a better job in the second half and overtime," said Lambinus. "A couple balls just hit their players and hit their goalie. Sometimes, you just hit the ball in the wrong spot." Along with a 26-6 edge in shots, Lehigh held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Miller played 65 minutes (the first half and both overtimes) and didn't see a shot on goal, while junior Lidia Breen made one save in the second half. Lehigh will return home next Saturday (Sept. 23) to host Boston University at 4 p.m. "It's good that we can make sure we recover, take care of some things over the next couple days and get ourselves ready," said Lambinus. "BU is one of the best teams in the league and it will be our biggest test of the year. I do think it'll be a really good matchup. Both teams are really solid defensively and at times, both teams haven't been able to score as many goals as they'd like. On paper, two teams that are similar. We'll see how it plays out on Saturday." Like Lehigh Women's Soccer on Facebook, follow on Twitter and Instagram for continued updates on the Mountain Hawks.
