Lehigh set to host Lafayette Saturday night

October 11, 2018

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off two strong efforts in the span of three days, the Lehigh women's soccer team will host archrival Lafayette this Saturday evening. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. Lehigh's six seniors will be recognized prior to opening kickoff on Senior Night.

Most recently, the Mountain Hawks dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime final vs. Penn Monday, two days after a 1-0 road win at American Saturday. Lehigh's effort Monday came against a Quakers' team that entered with an 8-1-1 record. After getting outshot 7-0 in the first half, the Mountain Hawks outshot Penn 9-8 in the second, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Penn scored the game-winning goal in the 110th minute to snap Lehigh's two-game winning streak against the Quakers in the all-time series.

Junior goalkeeper Sam Miller made five saves for the Mountain Hawks, just hours after being named. Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. Miller won her 10th career goalkeeper of the week honor (and 12th career weekly award) after a six-save shutout at American Saturday. The last was a strong, aggressive stop in the final minute to help preserve Lehigh's first-ever win at American. Senior Sabrina Mertz scored the game's only goal in the first half to help Lehigh to its first Patriot League win.

With the victory, the Mountain Hawks are back within a single game of a Patriot League Tournament position. Lehigh stands 1-4-0 in the league while Holy Cross is in sixth at 2-3-0. The Mountain Hawks still have four games remaining, two at home and two on the road. Following Saturday's Senior Night game vs. the Leopards, Lehigh will play one final regular season home contest, hosting Bucknell next Wednesday (Oct. 17).

Like Lehigh, Lafayette stands 1-4-0 in league play (4-9-0 overall), beating Bucknell in its league opener (2-0) but falling to Holy Cross (2-0), Army West Point (1-0), Boston University (2-0) and Colgate (2-0) since. Alex Stanford leads the Leopards in goals (5) and points (11). Katie Brannigan owns a team-leading four assists while Krista Kissell also has four points behind two goals. Maggie Pohl has played every minute in goal, tallying a 1.46 goals against average and 0.784 save percentage.

Lehigh has won four of its five meetings with Lafayette, winning last season 2-0 on the road. Ally Friedman and Maggie Wadsworth scored the goals while Miller finished with five saves, including a penalty-kick stop in the 83rd minute to preserve a 1-0 advantage. That win gave the Mountain Hawks an 18-8-2 advantage in the all-time series. The teams first met on Oct. 19, 1991, a 2-1 Lehigh victory.

Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks will return to action next Wednesday (Oct. 17), hosting Bucknell at 7 p.m.
