September 9, 2011

LOS ANGELES -- The LMU men’s soccer team scored early and often Friday at Sullivan Field, running away with a 4-1 win over UC Riverside.

LMU moved to an even 2-2-0 on the season and improved its all-time record against the Highlanders to 8-0-1. The game was also a scoring breakthrough for the Lions who had managed just a combined two goals through their first three outings this season.

LMU earned two corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of play, but was unable to convert either into solid scoring opportunities. In the 26th minute, senior Conor Hunsicker broke through with his second goal of the season with a right footed shot just inside the box.

Logan McDaniel started the play n the right flank, sending a ball to Phil Da Silva near the endline. Silva chipped a pass back to Hunsicker, who sent his shot into the right corner of the net past goalkeeper Cody Suppe.

With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, Jonas Reiter gave LMU a 2-0 lead, scoring on a header off a cross by McDaniel.

UC Riverside nearly cut its deficit in half early in the second half as Azeez Atanda sent in a long, crossing shot form the right flank that a diving Jack McCormack was just able to deflect off target and out of bounds.

Keeping the momentum, LMU’s David Ponce made it 3-0 at the 70:21 mark sending a left footed shot from the top right corner of the box past the reach of Suppe.

The Highlanders broke through in the 84th minute as Cesar Piaz-Pizzaro scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Eric Johanson.

Less than one minute later, freshman Ryan Felix rounded out the scoring for the Lions, netting his first collegiate goal off of a double assist from David Flores and Tyler Krumpe.

The Lions return to action Sunday, traveling to face No. 17 UCLA at 4:30 p.m. at the Bruins’ North Athletic Field.
