Lone Score Lifts Wildcats Past Panthers
September 12, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican''s women''s soccer team suffered their first home loss of the year on Sunday afternoon as Northern Michigan got the timely score midway through the second half and held on down the stretch to defeat the Panthers, 1-0.
Following a scoreless first half that saw the Wildcats post a 6-4 advantage on shots , NMU scored the eventual game-winner at the 71:01 mark as Teven Sellers gathered a loose ball just inside the right wing corner of the box and connected on a shot to the far post.
ODU was not without its chances in the second as the Panthers outshot the Wildcats, 9-5, and held a 9-0 edge on corner kicks. ODU''s best look at goal came off a Tonya Frasik (Fr./Lebanon, OH) corner in the 60th minute as Jennifer Holton (Jr./Johnstown, OH) connected on a header, but the ball deflected off the crossbar and Slone Fleak''s (Sr./Sunbury, OH) immediate follow-up header was snatched up by the Northern Michigan''s keeper.
The Panthers held reigning GLIAC Player of the Week and leading goal scorer, Chelsea Lyons, to zero shots on limited touches, while finishing with a 15-9 overall edge on shots, including 7-5 with shots on goals and a 11-1 advantage on corners.
ODU is back at home on Friday, Sept. 16 as South Division rival, Ashland, visits for a 5 p.m. start.
