Long Island women beat Buffalo
August 30, 2009
Brooklyn, N.Y. – A goal by senior Kim Bishop (Valley Stream, N.Y.) just after the start of the second overtime gave the Long Island University women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Buffalo on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. The win helped LIU improve to 2-0-0 on the season and extended its home field win streak to 11 victories overall.

The game-winner game just 9:03 into the second extra period after the Blackbirds pushed the ball up the left side. Senior Aly Hanson (New Milford, N.J.) looped a cross into the front of the net, where a streaking Bishop managed to put a foot to it and directed her shot past the goalkeeper from close range for the difference in an otherwise evenly played contest.

Buffalo (0-3-0) nearly ended the contest in the first overtime period when Taylor Thompson ripped a shot from outside the penalty area that was narrowly tipped over the crossbar by freshman Jennifer Bannon (East Greenwich, R.I.) to preserve the tie. The save was the most spectacular of Bannon’s five stops on the day and helped her pick up her second shutout of the season. Overall, the LIU defense has allowed just three goals in its last 11 home matches and has eight shutouts in that span.

Following a first half in which the Bulls held a 6-2 advantage in shots, the Blackbirds picked up play after halftime. In the 66th minute, junior Caitlin Meadows (Brookdale, Calif.) sent a cross into the area that found junior Kayleigh Morgan (Harlow, England) in front of the net. Morgan’s shot, however, sailed just high over the net.

Although Buffalo had just three shots after halftime, Bannon had to come up with a big stop in the 81st minute after the Bulls’ Lindsey Bailey had a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Bailey’s shot got through the defensive wall, but was turned away by a diving Bannon.

In the first overtime the Blackbirds continued to go at the Bulls defense and had a chance when Meadows collected a loose ball about 20 yards from goal, but she was unlucky to send her shot sailing just wide of the goal. The game finished with a 12-10 edge in shots for LIU, but Amy Coron made four saves for Buffalo before the final goal.

The Blackbirds travel to San Francisco to take on the University of San Francisco in the USF odwalla Nike Classic on Friday, Sept. 4.
