LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s soccer road victory at in-state school Virginia Military Institute of the Big South Conference Sunday afternoon in Lexington.  Sophomore Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) scored the game-winning goal for the visiting Lancers (3-4-3) in the 66th minute against the host Keydets (3-3-1).  Longwood will play again on Friday afternoon, September 23, returning home to welcome Big South member Charleston Southern University to the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 4 p.m.  It will be Family Weekend at Longwood, and it’s free admission for everyone.
 
Longwood and VMI were scoreless at the intermission, though the Lancers enjoyed a commanding 13-0 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes.  The second half continued much like the first with Longwood keeping possession and controlling the action.  Pardue finally moved the net at 65:42 when she was successful on a low shot from about 10 yards to the left corner.  The Lancers outshot the Keydets 13-2 in the second half but the VMI keeper made six of her 10 stops over the final 45 minutes to keep things interesting.
 
“It’s always tough against VMI, especially at their place,” said 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “I liked the way we kept the ball and dictated a lot of the action.  We continue to create good chances in front of the goal, and today, Kelsey got the goal we needed to get the result on the road.”
 
Longwood took a 26-2 advantage in shots during the contest, including 11-2 in attempts on-goal, and had an 8-3 lead on corner kicks.  Pardue had six shots, one on-goal, to lead Longwood, while senior captain Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) took five shots, two on-goal, and fifth-year senior Alex Myers|Stafford (Colonial Forge) added three shots.  Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with two saves while registering her third shutout this season.
 
Liz Affronti and Gabby McCarron each took a shot for VMI, while Amanda Berrios played the duration in goal for the Keydets with 10 saves.
