FARMVILLE, Va. --  Lilja Bjork scored the lone goal of the match at 51:54 to lead visiting Campbell University to a 1-0 Big South Conference women’s soccer upset victory at Longwood University on Wednesday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Samantha Lawson made six saves while posting the shutout for the Fighting Camels (6-10, 2-7 Big South) against the host Lancers (8-7-2, 7-2 Big South), who had their four-match winning streak stopped.  Longwood will play at UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon, October 26 at 2 p.m. in North Carolina.
    
“We weren’t good enough in the front half of the field and we were just bad enough in the back half,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “Campbell had a lot to do with that and deserves credit for a good win on the road.  Hopefully, this is something that wakes us up and motivates us as we move forward and into postseason.”
    
Longwood and Campbell battled scoreless for the opening 45 minutes, though both teams had some misfortune on scoring opportunities.  Caitlin Schneider missed early for the Fighting Camels when her shot from inside the box hit the right post at 1:48.  Freshman Christina Corbin/Glen Allen missed late for the Lancers when her shot from similar distance hit the crossbar at 44:45.  Bjork found the net early in the second half when she got past a defender and put a shot from close range and in traffic past the keeper in the 52nd minute.  It proved to be the difference in the contest, though Longwood tried to answer right back with consecutive shots from junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake and senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond that were stopped by Lawson in the 54th minute.  The Lancers had a final attempt from long distance by senior Chelsea Walter/South Riding in the 87th minute, but Lawson had no trouble making the save.
    
Longwood had a 13-5 advantage in shots for the match, including 6-3 in attempts on goal, while it was 5-5 on corner kicks.  Pardue had three shots, one on goal, while Phillips was among three players with two shots, one on goal.  Graduate student and goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville played the duration in front of the net with two saves.
    
Schneider and Kine Thorsvik each had two shots, one on goal, for Campbell, while Lawson played the duration in front of the net with the six saves and the shutout for the Fighting Camels, who will host VMI on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
    
Longwood and Campbell were meeting for the ninth time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Fighting Camels lead the series, 5-3-1.
    
The contest was designated 'Play4theCure' in partnership with the National Foundation for Cancer Research and its fundraising campaign.  To raise awareness, the team wore commemorative jerseys with a lavender ribbon on them, and these special game-worn jerseys are being auctioned off to help raise money for the cause.  The online auction will end on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
