August 25, 2011
ELON, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 women’s soccer decision on the road at Elon University of the Southern Conference Thursday night in North Carolina. The Phoenix (1-0-1) scored the only goal of the closely-played match in the 60th-minute against the visiting Lancers (1-1-1). It was the first goal allowed in three matches this season by Longwood who will play again on Monday, August 29, remaining on the road at nearby rival Liberty University of the Big South Conference in Lynchburg beginning at 7 p.m. Longwood and Elon battled to a scoreless tie at the intermission before Jaclyn Wood was able to move the net at 59:36 for the Phoenix. Wood was assisted by Catherine Brinkman on the decisive goal scored early in the second half. “It was a very even game,” said 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “I think both teams created close to the same amount of chances. It always comes down to goals, and unfortunately, we conceded a goal in the second half and were not able to get one for ourselves. We’ll re-group and see if we can be better against Liberty.” Longwood and Elon each had seven shots during the contest, though the Phoenix led 2-0 in attempts on-goal, while the Lancers had a 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Senior captain Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) and junior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) each had two shots to lead Longwood. Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with one save. Shannon Cosgrove and Kate Murphy split the match in goal for Elon, while Brinkman led the Phoenix with two shots. Longwood had defeated Elon last season in Farmville by a score of 6-0 on September 17, 2010.
