Longwood Falls To Visiting North Carolina State 4-1

October 8, 2011
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-1 women’s soccer decision to visiting North Carolina State University of the Atlantic Coast Conference Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) scored the only goal of the match for the Lancers (4-6-3), while the visiting Wolfpack (9-4-2) led 2-0 at halftime and added two more goals in the second half en route to their road victory. Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, October 9, hosting the New Jersey Institute of Technology of the Great West Conference at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m. North Carolina State took an early 1-0 advantage just 1:04 into the contest when Shelli Spamer collected a loose ball in the box following a corner kick and shot successfully through traffic into the back of the net. Longwood recovered from the quick score and battled back against an aggressive Wolfpack attack, but an own-goal in the 35th minute made it 2-0 as a ball was deflected off a defender into the goal on another corner opportunity to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the intermission. The Lancers began the second half with some offensive push and closed the margin to 2-1 in the 57th minute when Pardue took a rebound off the post from a hard shot by freshman Kelsey McDonald|Kennett Square, Pa. (Unionville) and promptly converted her own shot into the net -- McDonald getting credit for the assist with her shot off the post directly back to Pardue. NCSU, however, responded as it wanted with two more quick goals at 57:38 and 59:59 to secure the outcome. Kristina Argiroff scored the team’s third goal with a shot from the top of the box, and Tanya Cain added the final goal when she battled for another loose ball in front of the net resulting from yet another corner kick and shot into the net once again. “North Carolina State is probably the strongest team we''ll play this year and we had a solid game plan going in,” said 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “In the first half, we defended well within the flow of play and limited them to a total of three shots on goal. Two of those shots were off of corners that we let bounce too many times in our own box and ended up in the back of our net. “In the second half, we stayed disciplined defensively and eventually fought our way back into the game with Pardue''s goal that made it 2-1. That was short lived, though, and we just allowed too much space in our back third and conceded two more goals in a very short time. That was the point of no return, so we used it as an opportunity to get some players on the field that have been working hard and waiting patiently all season. “All-in-all, we battled ... defended well a lot of the time ... and we scored a goal against a very good N.C. State team that competes in the strongest conference (ACC) in the country. We''ll use the whole experience to make us better for Sunday (against NJIT) and our remaining schedule.” North Carolina State took an 18-6 advantage in shots, including 10-2 on goal, and the Wolfpack had a 10-0 margin on the corner kicks. Pardue registered three shots, one on goal, and McDonald had two shots, one on goal, to lead Longwood. Sophomore Shelby Hall|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) started at goalkeeper and played the first half for the Lancers with one save, while junior Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the second half with five saves. Meagan Proper had five shots, two on goal to lead NCSU, while Cain added three shots, two on goal, and Argiroff also had three shots, one on goal. Kim Kern played the first 83:44 at keeper for the Wolfpack with one save, and Victoria Hopkins played the final 6:16. Longwood and North Carolina State were meeting for the first time in the sport of women’s soccer.
