Longwood Ties Howard 0-0 In Double-Overtime

August 27, 2013

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University battled to a 0-0 women’s soccer double-overtime tie against Howard University on Tuesday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Lancers (0-1-1) had a 17-1 advantage in shots after the intermission, led on the night by senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond with seven shots, while graduate goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville made three saves for her first collegiate shutout.  Keeper Kyra Dickinson had nine stops for the visiting Bison (0-0-1).  Longwood will play on the road at the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Friday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Richmond.

Longwood and Howard battled scoreless throughout the 110 minutes of action.  The Bison got the better of it during the first 45 minutes, taking a 3-1 edge in scoring attempts.  The Lancers, however, began the second half with another level of energy and took control at the offensive end of field -- outshooting Howard 14-1 during the second 45 minutes.  Dickinson saved all eight of the second-half attempts on goal, including three-straight early shots by Pardue in less than four minutes.  The best scoring opportunity came in the 79th minute when senior Chelsea Walter/South Riding hit the crossbar on a left-footed attempt from outside the box, and a rebound attempt went wide right.  Pardue had a good look from close range in the 80th minute that was also stopped.

Longwood had one attempt in the first 10-minute extra period that went high.  Walter had another attempt for the Lancers in the second OT, almost identical to her near-miss in regulation, but Dickinson managed to get a hand on it.  A final shot in the 106th minute was wide right again.

“That’s a game we need to win,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “We didn’t show up in the first half and then we couldn’t finish our chances in the second half.  We need to be better in a lot of areas.  Give Howard credit for a stubborn defensive effort.  It’s time for us to get back to work.”

Longwood had an 18-4 advantage in shots, including 9-4 in attempts on goal, and it was a 10-4 edge on corner kicks for the Lancers.  Pardue led the way with seven shots, four on goal, and junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake had three shots, two on goal, for the hosts.  Hall played the duration in front of the net with the three saves, while there was also a team save during the shutout.

Howard was led by four different players with a shot attempt each, and each was on target, while Dickinson had the nine saves and the shutout for the Bison.

Longwood and Howard were meeting for the 14th time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Lancers still lead the series, 11-2-1.
