Look for Mich. to upset Maryland in Elite 8
November 30, 2010

The biggest surprise in the men’s tournament so far? The lack of surprises. The matches have been great thus far, though.

Top seeds: Given the parity in college soccer, it’s a little surprising to see that all of the top guns are still intact – albeit by the smallest of margin. Louisville got a second-half goal from Austin Berry to edge Ohio State 2-1; North Carolina needed a goal from Enzo Martinez with nine seconds remaining to force overtime and eventually beat Michigan State 1-1 in PKs, while Akron nipped Indiana 2-1 and Maryland got past Penn State 1-0. Unlike the women’s side, the men’s bracket has lacked the big upsets but also been without the dominant runs by a couple of programs. In other words, this thing is wide open.

Young and tested: The UCLA Bruins might be young, but they have to be taken seriously in this tournament, particularly after a clutch 2-1 double OT triumph against Dartmouth on Sunday. Eder Arreola notched the game-winner with eight seconds left in the second OT and the Bruins are on to the next one despite being lead by a core of freshman and sophomores. Youth is definitely being served in Westwood, CA, and UCLA will now move on to face No. 1 Louisville.

Streaking wolverines: One of the hottest teams in the country entering the tournament, Michigan continued its good vibes with a 3-1 win against South Carolina. Soony Saad scored his 19th goal of the season, which puts him one behind nation leader Corey Hertzog (Penn State) who is now defenseless as his team was just eliminated.

A lot to Bear: It was a little less eventful, but every bit as satisfying. One week after their controversial run-in with Santa Barbara, California calmly marched ahead with a 2-0 win over Brown. John Fitzpatrick scored and David Bingham made nine saves and kept a clean sheet to help the Bears join fellow Pac-10 program UCLA in the elite eight.

Which top seed will fall?: Louisville vs. UCLA; SMU vs. North Carolina, Akron vs. California and Maryland vs. Michigan are four incredible matchups. A win by any of these programs could hardly be called an upset and it’s realistic to think more than one higher seed could fall. But if you’re looking for one unsung group to prevail look for Michigan. The Wolverines are in the midst of a great stretch right now and I say it continues.
