LOOMIS GOALS PUSH UND OVER DSU, 2-1, IN DOUBLE OT

September 29, 2011

DOVER, Del. – The Delaware State University women’s soccer team cannot seem to catch a break this season and tonight was no different as the Hornets lost, 2-1, in double overtime to the University of North Dakota in the Great West Conference opener.

“Tonight was a devastating loss,” stated DSU head coach Nitan Soni.  “The girls walked off the field working very, very hard, but in the end we just made way too many mistakes.  We gave up the ball too much.  We need to be a lot sharper in our passing and in terms of being smart as to where we have the ball on the field.”

UND’s Rachael Loomis scored both goals on the night for the Fighting Sioux, but her second goal is what sealed the deal. In the 103rd minute, DSU freshman goalie Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) came too far out in the box when Loomis drove past her to nail the game-winning goal from five yards out into the lower left net.

“The error on Katelyn was hard, but she makes one mistake and it’s a goal,” Soni commented.  “Unfortunately, that’s the responsibility and role of that position.  The girls in front of her could make 500 mistakes and get away with them.  This doesn’t change how well she’s done this year and how good she’s going to continue to be for us this season.”

Loomis also scored the first goal of the night, coming in the 84th minute.  The Hornets responded almost immediately, with a goal coming from junior Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.) a minute later in the 85th minute.

“We had a great response time from our girls in terms of Jeanette’s goal,” remarked Soni.  “That’s the kind of goal that wins you a game.”

Koslosky recorded five saves and DSU was outshot, 16-7, on the night.

The Fighting Sioux improve to 3-5-2 overall the season and 1-0-0 in Great West Conference play while the Hornets fall to 1-11-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the GWC.  The game was the first matchup of the two schools in women’s soccer history.

Del State hosts Houston Baptist, also for the first time in school history, on Saturday with kick off scheduled for 11 a.m.
