Louisville women fall to Illinois
September 20, 2010
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The 16th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season with a 3-0 loss at No. 21 Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
With their first loss of the season, which ended the longest winning streak in school history, the Cardinals are now 7-1-0 overall, while the Fighting Illini improved to 7-1-0.
"I was disappointed with our lack of effort and our willingness to compete," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Those two qualities must be there for us to play the type of soccer we are capable of playing. Take nothing away from Illinois because they are a very good team, but our performance today was not where it needed to be."
On Sunday, Illinois opened the scoring in the 37th minute as Megan Pawloski took a cross from Jackie Guerra and scored into the upper right corner for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
After holding that advantage into the halftime break, the Fighting Illini pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute as Shayla Mutz took a pass from Julie Ewing and found the lower left corner of the goal for her second goal of the year.
Illinois closed the scoring in the 87th minute when Marissa Holden scored into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season, while Marissa Mykines had the assist.
Overall, Louisville finished with a 26-10 disadvantage on shots, including an 8-2 edge for the Illini in shots-on-goal. Illinois finished with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks, while Louisville was whistled for 11 fouls to Illinois' five fouls.
Up next, the Louisville women's soccer team returns to BIG EAST Conference road game at DePaul on Friday at 4 p.m. ET in Chicago, Ill.
