Loyola (MD) women defeat Manhattan
October 27, 2009
Theresa Ferraina scored the game-winning goal in her final appearance at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field to give the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds a 1-0 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers on senior day, Sunday, October 25. Loyola finishes the regular season at 13-4-2 and a perfect 9-0-0 in the MAAC. With the loss, Manhattan falls to 7-9-2 overall and 2-5-2 in conference play.
Ferraina’s score came with just over nine minutes to play in the first half to seal the deal for the Greyhounds. Fellow senior Christina Gomez created the play with some fancy dribbling in the middle and passed a ball down the far right side. Freshman Nichole Schiro then delivered a cross into the box and Ferraina was in perfect position for the score.
With the goal, Ferraina capped off the regular season with her 24th career goal and 63rd career point. Her 24 goals tie her for fourth all-time at Loyola with Courtney Arikian (2003-07) and her 63 points tie her for third in program history with Becky Bieneman (1999-02).
Brittany Henderson made four saves in the shutout in her final home game, giving her nine for the season and 25 for her career.
Manhattan’s best chance to score was with just over 15 minutes remaining as a shot by Courtney McMahon sailed just over the crossbar.
The Greyhounds will now travel to Lake Buena Vista, Fla., at the Disney Wide World of Sports for the 2009 MAAC Championships, in hopes to advance to their seventh NCAA College Cup. As the number one seed, Loyola will have a bye in the opening round and play the winner between Rider and Manhattan in the quarterfinals on October 30.
