BALTIMORE – Despite Loyola (MD) dominating the play for much of the second half, No. 14 Monmouth got a goal from Ryan Clark with 12:07 remaining to remain unbeaten and record a 1-0 non-conference victory over the Greyhounds Saturday afternoon in front of 1,322 Family Weekend spectators on Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.

The Hawks improved to 8-0-0 on the strength on Clark's lone goal of the game. On the play, Monmouth's Cody Calafiore served the ball from the right side to Clark who deftly headed the ball past a sprawling Loyola netminder Kyle Wittman  and into the right corner of the net for the winner.

“I thought it was a very closely contested game and a bit of quality won,” Loyola Head Coach Mark Mettrick said. “We had some chances, hitting the post and such, and we have to play better than we are.”

The momentum remained in the Hawks' favor following the goal, having at least two other quality chances for goals while the Greyhounds tried to gain the equalizer.

Loyola (3-4-1) swung the play to its side of the field immediately following the intermission, having two good opportunities to seize the lead. The first came five minutes into the second half when forward Jamie Darvill  fed the ball ahead to Matt Tyrie with the freshmen forward's straight-on 15-yard shot being knocked over the crossbar by Hawks goalie Bryan Meredith.

Nearly 11 minutes later, junior Mike Deasel  served a nifty pass to junior Glenn Leitch whose header from the right side ended up in front of the left side where a shot from junior Phil Bannister, who had checked into the game seconds earlier, hit the left post.

The best chance for either team of the first half came at the 21:09 mark when the Hawks pressured the Loyola net and a shot by Ryan Kinne was saved by Greyhounds keeper Kyle Wittman with the rebound careening off the left post and back into the center of play. The first 45 minutes finished with Loyola holding a 4-3 advantage in shots.

Loyola is back in action Wednesday when it travels to Williamsburg, Va., to take on the William & Mary Tribe at 7 o'clock.
