LSU Soccer Scores 2-1 Monday Night Futbol Win Over Oklahoma

September 19, 2011

After senior Taryne Boudreau gave the Tigers broke the ice in the 52nd minute with her third goal of the season, junior Natalie Ieyoub opened her account in the 70th minute with what proved to be the game-winner in LSU’s 2-1 victory over Oklahoma on Monday night at the LSU Soccer Stadium.

Monday’s victory extended LSU’s unbeaten streak to five-straight games this season as the Tigers (5-3-1) are also unbeaten in five matches all-time against the Sooners (5-5) at 4-0-1 in the series.

In their non-conference finale, the Tigers also pushed their unbeaten streak to five-straight matches dating back to a 1-0 shutout of the Arkansas Razorbacks in the 2010 regular season finale.

“I thought it was one of the best all-around performances we’ve had in the past two years,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “We controlled possession, created a number of chances and put a couple away to go along with a fine defensive performance. This was a quality opponent we played tonight, so it should help prepare us for the tough matches we know we have coming up in SEC play.”

Despite taking a 0-0 lead into the break, Boudreau netted her team-leading third goal of the campaign just seven minutes into the second half with a 25-yard chip shot over the head of the Oklahoma goalkeeper.

After sophomore Addie Eggleston played a delightful ball over the top of the Sooner back line, Boudreau led the attack down the right side as she picked her head up and lofted a chip shot over the head of Sooner goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire from 25 yards that found the back of the net inside the left post.

Ieyoub then extended LSU’s lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute after controlling the entry pass into the area by freshman Alex Cook. She then dribbled past an Oklahoma defender, cut back in the middle of the penalty area and fired an eight-yard strike past a diving Devonshire inside the left post at the 69:44 mark.

Caitlin Mooney pulled one back for the Sooners just 51 seconds from time, but it proved too little too late for Oklahoma to make a comeback as the Tigers scored a 2-1 victory in their non-conference finale.

“We kept pushing for a goal and had a lot of good chances. When I saw that the goalkeeper was far off of her line expecting me to cross it, I thought I’d take a shot,” Boudreau said. “That goal allowed us to relax the rest of the match and push on for Natalie’s finish. It’s a huge win for us as we go into conference play. We can see everything coming together, and hopefully we can keep winning games.”

The Tigers turned up the heat in the attack early and often on Monday night with senior defensive stalwart Allysha Chapman creating LSU’s best scoring opportunity during the opening 45 minutes.

Chapman found herself on a breakaway just over five minutes into the match after running onto a through ball played past the Sooner back line by senior midfielder Kellie Murphy. After Chapman’s initial attempt was saved by Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire, she pounced on the rebound and fired a strike off the crossbar with an open net from just beyond the six-yard box.

After wrapping up the non-conference season at 5-3-1 with a five-game unbeaten streak, the Tigers are set to turn their attention to SEC play as they welcome the Mississippi State Bulldogs to Baton Rouge in their conference opener on Friday night with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CDT at the LSU Soccer Stadium.
