The 14^th-ranked LSU soccer team saw its six-game winning streak and nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion Friday night with a 2-1 double overtime defeat to the Vanderbilt Commodores in its first SEC road contest played at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

The Commodores (7-6, 1-4 SEC) scored the Golden Goal just three minutes into the second overtime on a counter attack to secure their first conference win of the season in their SEC home opener.

When a strike from beyond the penalty spot by LSU’s senior midfielder Taryne Boudreau was kept out of the net by Vanderbilt goalkeeper Jessica Amlaw, the Commodores went on the attack going the other way as the ball found the feet of midfielder Emily Grant on the counter.

That’s when Grant picked up her head and served a ball over LSU’s back line to striker Gena Inbusch on the breakaway. While drawing goalkeeper Mo Isom off her line to challenge, Inbusch raced into the area and buried a shot inside the left post to give Vanderbilt the victory in the 103^rd minute of play.

The Tigers (9-4-1, 4-1) suffered their first defeat in conference play this season while falling back into a tie for first atop the league table with Florida as each side has secured 12 points from five league matches.

Friday’s result marked the first time that the Tigers have come up on the wrong end of the score line since suffering a 1-0 defeat in double overtime at Rice back on Sept. 2. Not only did the Tigers see their streaks of six-straight wins and nine-straight games unbeaten come to an end Friday night, but they also fell to an SEC opponent for the first time in eight matches dating back to the 2010 regular season.

Tiger sophomore Addie Eggleston broke the ice in the 57^th minute only seconds after winning a free kick for her side just beyond the edge of the penalty area down the left side.

Boudreau stepped up to take the free kick just outside the box as she served a floated ball to the far post to junior striker Carlie Banks standing inside of the six-yard box. Banks fired a shot on frame that was saved deflected back into the middle of the box by Amlaw, but Eggleston pounced on the loose ball and buried a strike from the top of the six-yard box to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage at the 56:35 mark.

But LSU’s lead was short-lived as defender CJ Rhoades netted the equalizer inside of nine minutes from a free kick of their own taken by striker Candace West on the right side. West’s serve found Rhoades in the middle of the area as the fullback flicked it inside the left post in the 68^th minute of action.

The sides then played scoreless in the final 22 minutes of regulation and through the first overtime period before Rhoades netted the game-winning goal at the 102:55 mark of the second overtime frame.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Lexington, Ky., for yet another crucial SEC match against the Kentucky Wildcats that is set to kick off at noon CDT at the UK Soccer Complex. They continue their four-game road swing next weekend with a tour through the state of Alabama as they battle Auburn on Friday, Oct. 16, before taking on Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 18.
