Lumberjacks Seniors Help Top North Dakota

Published: October 20, 2013

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over North Dakota to send the six seniors off with a win. Seniors Shelby Foltz, Jordan Stenger, Elinor Priest, Shawnee Morgan, Lauren Weaver and Alana D’Onofrio were honored before Sunday’s contest against North Dakota and the seniors did not disappoint in their final home match as a Lumberjack.

“It is a fitting, last home game for these seniors,” said head coach Andre Luciano. “Lauren and Alana provided the shutout who have been mainstay’s for us in the backline. Elinor was brilliant on both sides of the ball and Jordan provided great energy and was able to get an assist. Finally, Shawnee with a brilliant header to secure the win and I am just proud of how well they played.”

Freshman forward Lindsay Doyle was able to get the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard first when she received a pass from Morgan inside the box and the freshman was able to give the senior the assist. Stenger also received an assist on the play as she passed the ball to Morgan to put the Lumberjacks up 1-0 in the first half.

“It felt good to score for my seniors out there today,” said Doyle. “We just played really hard and wanted to win for our seniors so I am very happy for them.”

Morgan’s goal came in the 80th minute from a Cierra Gamble cross into the box and Morgan was able to place a great header into the back of the net to secure the win for the Lumberjacks.

“I am happy that I was able score a goal on senior day in front of my parents,” said Morgan. “It was nice to go out with a bang at my last home match at Lumberjack Stadium.”

For the second straight match, Weaver recorded another shutout, which is her seventh of the season and 18th of her career. The defense of the Lumberjacks was stellar against UND allowing only four shots with one on goal.

This is the first time this season the Lumberjacks have captured two home games in one weekend and it could not have come at better time as the pair of wins this weekend put the Lumberjacks right in the middle to claim one of the four spots in the Big Sky Conference tournament.

“Today was very special because of all the emotion that comes along with senior day,” said Stenger. “All the blood, sweat and tears we have poured on this field for our teammates is very motivating and I am glad we were able to come out with a win.”

The Lumberjacks will head back out on the road for their final two matches of the regular season against Montana and Eastern Washington beginning on Friday, Oct. 25.
