Lundy goal leads Lady Bison soccer to record

October 16, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lipscomb women’s soccer freshman Ellen Lundy scored the game-winning goal for the Lady Bisons which not only gave a 1-0 victory over Atlantic Sun Conference foe North Florida but also a program record fifth win.

“That was a wonderful performance today,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “From start to finish the girls dug in and competed the way we needed to, to get the win.”

The Lady Bisons improved to 5-6-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the A-Sun. The Ospreys fall to 4-9-2 and 1-3-0 in the league.

Lundy, who continues to set a torrid pace with 13 goals scored, received her opportunity from a team effort in the 76th minute. A cross came into freshman Alesonda Colbert who slipped the ball past the Osprey defensive line towards the back post as Lundy volleyed the ball into the net.

“It was a good finish,” O’Brien said. “We didn’t create a ton of chances but the one we did, we finished.”

Lundy leads the A-Sun in goals scored and entered the weekend ranked ninth in total goals scored in the nation.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Buhigas picked up her fifth shutout of the year, which sets a new program record, with seven saves. She entered the weekend 25th in NCAA Division I in total saves and continues to lead the A-Sun with 86 saves.

Megan Dorsey had three stops for the Ospreys.

Despite starting eight freshmen for the second consecutive game, Lipscomb has reached new heights and has its eyes on a bigger prize.

“We are absolutely thrilled about what has taken place,” O’Brien said. “Most importantly, we have set ourselves up to be in the hunt to qualify for the A-Sun Championships.”

The Lady Bisons conclude the three-game road trip at Northern Kentucky on Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
