BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University women's soccer head coach Mick Lyon announced today (Nov. 28) that he will retire as the head coach of the women's soccer program.

Lyon has been the head coach at Indiana for 11 seasons (2002-12) and compiled a record of 95-98-21 with the Hoosiers. Including his nine prior seasons at Evansville, his career head coaching record is 202-163-39. He has seen 14 of his players earn either first or second team All-Big Ten accolades in his time with the Hoosiers and two were also named NSCAA first team All-Region. In addition, his student-athletes received 128 Academic All-Big Ten honors during his tenure.

"Mick has been a tremendous asset to the women's soccer program at Indiana University for the past 11 seasons and we appreciate all that he has done for the program," Glass said. "The results of his work could be seen not only on the pitch but also in the classroom, as his teams continuously achieved very high marks in regards to the APR and GSR year in and year out. We thank him for all of his dedication to IU and wish him well in his retirement."

During the 2012 season, he saw graduating senior Oriancia Velasquez close out her four-year career (2009-12) at Indiana with 26 career goals, which is tied for fourth-most in school history and her 64 career points are also the fourth-most in the history of the program. Velasquez was also the first player in program history to participate in the Summer Olympic Games when she competed for her home country of Colombia at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. She played for Colombia in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany as well.

"After consulting with my wife, Elizabeth, and my closest friends, I have decided that now is the time to retire from coaching soccer and I have submitted my resignation effective end of the year," Lyon said. "These past couple of years have been extremely difficult for me physically, so in the best interest of Indiana University, its Athletic Department, and most importantly the IU Women's Soccer Team, it is time for a change in my life.

"I want to say thanks to Fred Glass for his support, assistant coaches Chloe McKay and Megan Reinhardt, two of the best young assistant coaches in the country; and to athletic trainer Wendy Poppy, who is hands down the best in her profession. Go Hoosiers!"

A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately, with the search being led by Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Administration and Senior Women's Administrator Julie Cromer.

Pending the appointment of a new head coach, Glass has organized a transition team to help oversee the women's soccer program comprised of: Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services Kelly Noonan (Chair), Assistant Athletic Trainer Wendy Poppy, Academic Advisor Eileen O'Rourke, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Elaine Deppe and Assistant Director for Media Relations Nathan Wiechers.
