Maryland men face Virginia in NCAA quarterfinals Friday

December 3, 2009
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A Final Four appearance is at stake Friday night as Maryland squares off with No. 2 seed Virginia in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.

Maryland (15-5-2) defeated its second consecutive seeded opponent Sunday when it ousted No. 10 seed Harvard from postseason play. Casey Townsend and Billy Cortes each netted scores in the win. Sophomore Zac MacMath tallied five saves, including one on a penalty kick by Harvard All-American Andre Akpan, to guide Maryland to its ninth shutout of the 2009 campaign.

Friday's match in Charlottesville is the third meeting between Virginia and Maryland this season, with the Cavaliers holding a slight 1-0-1 advantage after topping the Terps in the second round of the ACC Tournament.

With a win, defending national champion Maryland would capture its sixth Final Four berth in the last eight years.
