Maybin Earns Hat Trick; #1 Rangers Defeat Mountain Lions 3-1 in RMAC Tournament First Round

DENVER, Colo.:  Nationally ranked #1 Regis University men's soccer defeated UC-Colorado today in the first round of the RMAC Tournament.  Sophomore Martin Maybinput through three goals for the Rangers, garnering his second hat trick of the 2012 season.

Regis went down one right off the start of the match in the second minute of play.  The Rangers used the deficit as fuel to create more goal opportunities throughout the rest of the match, outshooting the Mountain Lions 27 to 10 on the day.  15 of the Rangers shot attempts were on goal.

To even the score in the fourth minute, senior David Key sent the ball down the field to Maybin.  Maybin bested his defender to the left for a 1-on-1 contest with the goalie.  He brought the ball to the left and shot right for the goal.

In the 40th minute, senior Mark Kelly sent a hard shot toward the goal that was saved by the Mountain Lion goalie.  He regained possession and tipped the ball over to Maybin who sent the ball through to the left for the game-winning goal.

The second half closed out 2-1, Regis over UC-Colorado Springs, but the Rangers were not quite ready to finish the match with only a one goal lead.

Six minutes into the second half, senior Alex Tarnoczi crossed in from the left side to Maybin, yet again, who was positioned on the right side of the 18 yard box.  Maybin shot in towards the goal, the ball banked off the left post and into the goal to bring the Rangers up 3-1 on the day.

Freshman goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi earned six saves on the day, allowing only the one goal in the first half.

The Rangers will host the RMAC Tournament Championship against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, November 4 at 2:30 PM.
