McGettigan’s Goal Gives Mount 2-1 win

Smithfield, R.I. (October 20, 2013) -- After giving up a goal just 3:43 into Sunday's road game at Bryant, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team leveled the score at 1-1 on Jackie Corley's first-half goal then netted the game-winner on Keriann McGettigan's header in the 87th minute for a 2-1 victory in Northeast Conference action. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Bourne made five saves in the first half, and fellow sophomore Vicky Cocozza made one second-half save to earn the win for the Mount (4-7-3, 2-2-1 NEC). The win for keeps the Mountaineers in the thick of the playoff race with three conference games remaining on the 2013 schedule. 

Bryant (5-10-1, 1-3-1 NEC) held a 26-13 advantage on shots, but only managed to put seven on target, while the Mount put nine on frame on the day. 

The Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard early on Sunday with their first shot finding the back of the net. Allison DeBenedicts' cross was headed in by Michelle Durand in the fourth minute for a 1-0 Bryant advantage. 

After back-and-forth action over the next 30 minutes, the Mountaineers were able to pull even on Corley's sixth goal of the season 33:32 into the first half. The senior midfielder dribbled up the sideline, then fired a shot over Bryant goalkeeper Kaylan Conrad's head. 

The two sides would head into the locker rooms tied at 1-1. 

The Mount forced Conrad to make four saves in the first 33 minutes of the second half until coming up with the game-winning strike on McGettigan's header over the goalkeeper with 3:23 remaining in regulation for the 2-1 victory. 

For McGettigan, it is her second game-winner of the season and the fifth goal of her career. 

Offensively, Corley put all of her team-high four shots on goal for the Mount, while DeBenedicts fired a game-high 10 shots, two of which were on target. 

The Mount returns to Waldron Family Stadium on Friday, Oct. 25, to take on Saint Francis University at 4 p.m.
