September 7, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AAC/SMU) – Sophomore forward Garrett McLaughlin was named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

McLaughlin netted two goals on four shots and tallied an assist (5 points) to earn his first weekly player of the week honor and be named to the SMU Tournament All-Tournament team. The 2016 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year now has two on the year, six in his career.

In SMU's 2-1 win against Oakland Friday, McLaughlin scored the game-winning goal and recorded an assist. In the 10th minute, the sophomore assisted Christian Boorom, before netting the eventual game-winner in the 64th minute. Off a cross from Eddie Munjoma, McLaughlin fired a bouncing ball through a pair of Golden Grizzly defenders and into the net.

In Sunday's 3-0 shutout of Cornell, McLaughlin scored in the 48th minute of play, recording the Mustangs' second goal of the night. In the 48th minute, Munjoma curled a 45-yard cross into the 18-yard box, where an open McLaughlin beat the Cornell backline and fired a shot past a diving Ryan Shellow from the nearside corner of the six-yard box.

Up next, SMU heads to California for its first road trip of the 2017 campaign. The Mustangs open with No. 1 Stanford Thursday at 10 p.m. CT/8 p.m. PT (Pac-12 Network), before playing at Santa Clara Saturday at 9 p.m. CT/7 p.m. PT.
