Meeker's Late Goal Pushes Cyclones Past PC

September 12, 2013

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior defender Reid Meeker's (Phillipsburg, N.J./Notre Dame Green Pond) goal with under 14 minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the game winner as Centenary College rallied for a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Purchase Saturday night at Morrison Field.

Meeker slipped in front of a defender and headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner-kick feed from freshman Luis Marin (Union City, N.J./Union Hill). The score was the fourth of Meeker's career.

Purchase took the lead midway through the first half as Myles Clohessy received a lead pass from Junior Sanguina and slipped the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice).

The score remained the same until the 69th minute when sophomore forward Abiodun Lawal's (Lagos, Nigeria/Irvington (N.J.)) crossing pass was headed into the net by classmate Nick DePasquale (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East). Meeker followed just under eight minutes later with his first-career, game-winning goal.

The Cyclones outshot the Panthers 6-3 and recorded all eight corner kicks during the match. Goleman collected a pair of saves, while Purchase goalkeeper Esteban Aguilar blocked four shots.

Centenary, which improved to 4-0 all-time against the Panthers, with all four triumphs coming by one goal, upped its record to 2-1-1, while Purchase fell to 0-3.

Following a six-day layoff, the Cyclones are back in action Saturday at St. Joseph's (LI) beginning at 1:00 pm.
