Washington, DC – Earlier this afternoon, the men's soccer team kicked off their two game road swing with a matchup against the Bison of Howard University. Despite playing on the offensive for a majority of the game, one defensive miscue allowed the Bison to net the only goal they needed to serve the Panthers a 1-0 loss. In defeat, Adelphi drops to 2-12 while Howard moves to 2-13-1.

The Panthers maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the half, playing mostly in Bison territory. It was not until 17 minutes in until the first shot of the game was registered; taken by Alejandro Penzini, his strike was met with an Eric Hamilton save.

Despite taking just one shot in the first 45 minutes, the hosts made it count when they caught a break, sparked by Mario Martin in the 21st minute. After dribbling down the right side of the field, Adelphi Keeper Ahmad Salamah came out to break up the play, but Martin managed to dump a shot over and found the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers had their first real threat in the 60th minute. They penetrated into Howard territory and Steve Rivera sent in a shot from 20 yards out from the right side, but his try was contested by Howard keeper Hamilton. Adrian Sundquist picked up the rebound but was unsuccessful with the put back.

Three more Howard attempts almost resulted in a second goal, but Salamah made three diving saves to keep the Bison at bay.

In the last minute, a blast by Brandon Stoneham nearly tied the game, but the shot sailed just high over the crossbar.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, October 23 when they square off against the Wolf Pack of North Carolina State in Raleigh, NC. You can follow along with live stats.
