Garden City, N.Y. - Earlier today, the men's soccer team opened up their season with a home game against the Greyhounds of Loyola University. After a scoreless first half, the Greyhounds capitalized on an opportunity at 55:41 to net what would be the only goal of the game, serving the Panthers their first loss of the season. In defeat, Adelphi moves to 0-1 while Loyola stands at 1-0.

In the opening half, the Panthers had two opportunities with the first coming at 32:29 when Mauricio Mora sent a corner in to Brandon Stoneham who shot it just wide of the goal. Adelphi had another chance at 42:00 when a cross by Travis Tennie was batted away by Greyhound keeper, Kyle Wittman.

After a scoreless first half, Loyola had a near opportunity in the opening minute of the second half when Vegard Vinje dribbled down the right side nearing the net, but was stopped by an excellent defensive hustle by Mora, taking away a scoring chance. However, just over ten minutes in, the Greyhound's Stephen Dooley had control of the ball down by the right corner and sent a pass toward the middle where Geaton Caltabiano had an open look and fired the ball past a diving Blackmer, giving Loyola the 1-0 lead.

The Panthers would go on to have a pair of looks at the net, but shots by Omar Edwards and Steven Rivera were denied by Wittman. In the finals minutes, Adelphi began to put pressure on Loyola, controlling the ball and testing the keeper, but the Greyhounds defense stopped the attack.

Adelphi led the Greyhounds in shooting, 11 to seven and corners, seven to three. Blackmer took the loss as he made two saves on the day while Wittman got the win and stopped four shots on goal.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, September 4 when they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on the Red Foxes of Marist University. The game is slated for a 7pm start.
