Men's Soccer Falls to Marist

September 6, 2011

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - On Sunday, the men's soccer team traveled to Poughkeepsie, New York for a non-conference matchup against the Red Foxes of Marist College. Despite being deadlocked at one a piece through halftime, the Panthers let up two second half goals and would not be able to recover. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 0-2 while Marist moves to 2-1.

Marist got on the board early in the first half at the 7:54 mark when Tony Confessore sent a cross to Stephan Brossard who headed it in, beating keeper Kyle Blackmer to net the first goal of the game and give his team the early one goal lead.

Less than six minutes later, senior Dan Larenius took a free kick from 20 yards out and found the back of the net, beating a diving Steve Skonieczny to level the playing field at one. The Red Foxes managed to out-shoot the Panthers 10-3 the rest of the first half, but either team would not be able to go ahead as they headed into halftime.

At the 69:49 mark, Lucas Szabo found the back of a net off of a double assist by Brossard and Confesore to give Marist the go ahead goal. The Red Foxes struck again, adding an insurance goal in the 87th minute when Confessore sailed a free kick from 30 yards out that found the top left shelf, giving his team a two goal lead. The Panthers fought hard to get back in, but time would run out and the game would end in Marist's favor.

The Panthers were out-shot 15-9 during the game and had a disadvantage in corners, 1-5. Blackmer suffered his second loss while making five saves on the day.

The Panthers are back in action on Thursday, September 8 when they travel north to Syracuse, New York to take on the Syracuse Orange. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
