Men’s Soccer Tames No. 22 Mustangs In Physical Top-25 Battle

AUSTIN, Texas – The beneficiaries of a foul in the box and resulting penalty kick conversion, NSCAA No. 19 Colorado School of Mines men's soccer prevailed 1-0 against No. 22 Midwestern State Sunday at St. Edward's Lewis-Chen Family Field in Austin, Texas.

At 53:38, MSU red-shirt junior Kalen Ryden fouled senior Baski Baker inside the 18-yard penalty area, setting up a penalty kick attempt for senior Tesho Akindele who beat the goalkeeper for his team-leading third goal and second game-winner.

Ranked No. 2 in Division II with 22 scores a season ago, Akindele has at least one goal in five straight games dating back to a 2-0 win over Metro State in the 2012 RMAC Tournament semifinals on Nov. 2.

Akindele tallied a game-high four shots; sophomore Richard Garvey recorded two looks, and Baker and junior newcomer Matthew Alemann each had one shot on frame. The teams finished even in shots, 10-10, while Mines held an 8-5 advantage on corners and a slim edge in shots on goal, 3-2.

Netminder Colin Baker collected two saves in the match and improved to 2-0 with the first shutout of his career.

The Orediggers and Mustangs (0-2) combined for three cautions and 16 fouls, including 11 after the break.

Mines (2-0, 0-0 RMAC) returns home for its next five contests, beginning with the home-opener at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at CSM Soccer Stadium versus California Baptist (0-1).
