Men's Soccer Wins Eighth Straight with 2-0 Victory at Mount Ida
Freshman Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute as the Albertus Magnus men's soccer team defeated Mount Ida 2-0 to remain unbeaten in GNAC play.
With the victory, Albertus improves to 9-2 on the year and now holds an unblemished 6-0 record in league action. Mount Ida falls to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC standings.
After a scoreless first half, Barrett gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead as he connected on a loose ball in the box, finding the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season. The freshman's shot was unassisted.
Albertus added to its lead in the 71st minute as Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) recorded an insurance goal with his second score of the season. Jesse Plona (Trumbull, Conn.) sent a goal kick down the field, and with the help of the wind, found Zapata in the middle of the pitch, where he beat two defenders and fired a shot into the back of the net.
Led by Jamal Howard (West Haven, Conn.) with five shots, Albertus outshot Mount Ida 19-8 on the afternoon.
Albertus' Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) made two saves in his fifth shutout of the season, while Mount Ida's Mat Pils allowed both Falcon goals and made four saves in 90 minutes played.
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a home contest against Emerson. The time of Saturday's match is now 1:00 p.m. and will take place prior to the Albertus Magnus women's soccer game.
