Men’s Soccer: ACU Suffers Fifth Shutout, 4-0, at Simpson

Redding, Calif. – Simpson University improved its season record to 3-8 with a 4-0 shutout victory over Arizona Christian University (0-10-1), in Redding, Calif.  Arizona Christian’s northern California road trip concludes on Saturday, October 15, when ACU meets California State University-Maritime in Vallejo near San Francisco at 1 p.m.  ACU has lost five matches by shutout this season.

Simpson recorded its third shutout victory of the season and effectively put away the match early with three first-half goals in the first 36 minutes of action and one more for good measure in the 58th minute of play.  Simpson’s senior midfielder Kerry Meehan scored Eagles’ first and fourth goals and assisted on the second and third, earning his first six points of the season.  Meehan tallied at 15:29 off an assist by senior midfielder Michael Guzman and junior forward Tyler Goens and Meehan teamed up at 23:57 for a 2-0 lead.  Senior defender Tim Mederios and Meehan hooked up for a 3-0 lead at 36:10.

At 58:19 of the second 45-minute half, Meehan made the score 4-0 with an assist from junior defender Kyle Power.  Simpson narrowly outshot ACU, 15-13, but scored four goals on just six shots on goal, while Arizona Christian attempted 5 shots on goal, senior forward Brett Bowman (Glendale, Ariz./Northwest Christian H.S.).  ACU held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Simpson goalkeeper Justin Webb made five shots, including four in the second half, while junior Sidney Jones (La Ceiba, Honduras/Gatlinburg-Pitman H.S (Tenn.) saved two, one in each half.
