Men’s Soccer: Pacific Union Edges ACU, 2-1

Angwin, Calif. – Pacific Union College earned its first victory of the season in seven matches with a 2-1 victory over winless Arizona Christian University (0-9-1), at Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif.

Arizona Christian’s northern California road trip continues on Thursday, October 13, with a match at Simpson University in Redding, beginning at 3 p.m.  ACU also meets California State University-Maritime in Vallejo near San Francisco, Saturday, October 15, at 1 p.m.

All of the scoring occurred in the first half with PUC midfielder Matthew Kimble beginning the scoring off a corner-kick set play just 1:37 into the match, with midfielder Wagih Goda and Collin Smith earning the assists.  Arizona Christian senior midfielder John Kortman (Phoenix, Ariz./Northwest Christian H.S.) tied the match at 1-1 five minutes later with his first goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Chris Swanson (Tucson, Ariz./Academy of Math and Science), his first of the season.

PUC forward Randy Castanaza scored what proved to be the match-winner on another corner kick by Goda at the 27:28 mark.  Pacific Union attempted nine shots on goal against two ACU goalkeepers, and ACU attempted seven shots on goal, with Josh Koot earning six saves in the PUC net.  Kortman tried three of ACU’s shots on goal, and senior forward Brett Bowman (Glendale, Ariz./Northwest Christian H.S.) attempted two.

Senior Joshua Ortiz-Gonzalez (Kayes, Mali/Lycee Dougoukolo Konare) made his first collegiate appearance and start in the ACU net, and allowed both goals and saved three other shots on goal.  Junior Sidney Jones (La Ceiba, Honduras/Gatlinburg-Pitman H.S (Tenn.) saved four shots in the second 45-minute half.  Starter goalkeeper Jorge Arauz suffered an ankle injury two matches ago against Soka, Oct. 7, forcing ACU coach Jonathan Lenarz to use inexperienced netminders.
