Metz Scores Game-Winner in 1-0 Win at Texas

October 9, 2011

San Diego State redshirt sophomore Sophie Metz scored her second game-winner in as many games to help propel the Aztecs to a 1-0 victory at Texas Sunday afternoon. With its second straight win, SDSU improves to 7-5-3, while the home-standing Longhorns fall to 9-5.

Metz, who scored the game-winning goal at TCU in the fourth minute and added an assist just two days ago, was at it again on Sunday with her goal at the 43:25 mark. Cat Walker set up the game-deciding sequence when she dropped a pass into the box with Metz being the beneficiary. The midfielder/defender then executed a sliding left-footed kick that found the upper left corner of the goal.

For Metz, who had entered the weekend with zero points in 13 games as an Aztec after transferring from UCLA, the goal was her second in two games and her fourth and fifth points of the season. Her second game-winning goal matches Walker for the team lead. Walker, meanwhile, picked up her first assist of the 2011 to give her a team-high 13 points.

The goal marked the second consecutive outing in which the Aztecs scored less than two minutes before the halftime buzzer. At TCU, SDSU scored with 25 seconds left in the period to take a two-goal cushion into the mid-game break.

The first-half goal capped a beautiful effort by San Diego State, which thoroughly dominated the first 45 minutes. The Aztecs outshot the Longhorns, 7-2, with four of their seven coming on goal. Both of Texas’ shots, meanwhile, were non-threatening as SDSU goalkeeper Rachel Boaz and the Aztec backline kept the Longhorns at bay.

In the second half, San Diego State continued to pepper Texas goalkeeper Alexa Gaul with shots, but could not find the back of the net. The Longhorns, meanwhile, upped their shot attempts, but the SDSU defense held its ground to preserve the shutout.

The blanking was Boaz’s fifth of the season and San Diego State’s seventh of the year. The Aztecs’ performance marked the first time in 2011 in which they recorded back-to-back shutouts. Boaz finished with one save while playing all 90 minutes.

When the dust settled, SDSU held a 13-11 lead in shots and enjoyed a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Aztecs, who improved to 2-0-1 all-time vs. current members of the Big 12 Conference, return to action on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they put their season-long-tying two-game winning streak on the line vs. Boise State at SDSU Sports Deck. The Senior Day and Mountain West contest is set for 11 a.m. PT. Admission is free.
