Milwaukee Tops Ohio State, 1-0

September 2, 2018

DAYTON, OhioEvan Conway scored on a header in the first half and the defense of the Milwaukee men's soccer team made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field.

The Panthers (2-1-0) nearly doubled-up the shot total on the day by the Buckeyes (1-3-0), but only needed the one tally to earn the hard-fought victory.

"It was a great win for our group against a very physical, tough Ohio State team," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "Second game in three days in very hot weather against two very good soccer programs. It was an outstanding effort by our guys."

The goal came in a first half that saw MKE record six of the eight combined shots. Vuk Latinovich set it up, with his cross placed perfectly for Conway to head inside the far post at the 30:27 mark.

"Very pleased with the way we bounced back after Friday (a 2-0 loss to Dayton)," Kelderman said. "The result was a result that I thought was deserving. Some very good individual performances from the starting group, but I would also like to applaud our depth, which helped us carry through today."

Eight players saw time off the bench, with the group recording three shot attempts.

Goalkeeper Freddy Lorenzen was only officially called on for one save, but helped control a physical opponent to record his second shutout of the season.

For the day, Milwaukee finished with that 13-7 advantage in shots, which included a 4-1 edge in shots on target. The team had five of the 11 corner kicks, with Latinovich pacing the offense with a team-high four shot attempts.

Up next, the squad finally gets to play at home for a pair of games, welcoming Valparaiso Friday and Penn Sunday to Engelmann Stadium. Both games kick off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 (Friday) and ESPN+ (Sunday).
