Mimi Rangel Leads LBSU to 5-1 Rout of DePaul

September 11, 2016

LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team was dominant on Sunday afternoon as it routed DePaul, 5-1, at George Allen Field.

"We felt good about our performance, it's always good to score goals," head coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. "We also had a situation where we lost two in a row at home, and that doesn't usually happen, so we're excited to get the win."

The Beach scored a season-high five goals on 20 shots. Senior Mimi Rangel led the way with two as she recorded her third career brace and first since 2013. Freshman Kaitlin Fregulia and sophomore Rocio Rodriguez each found the back of the net for the second time this season, while junior Paige Conway connected for her first career goal.

LBSU outshot the Blue Demons, 20-to-8, and held a lopsided 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. It was the 49ers' first 20-shot game since Sept. 6, 2015 when they finished with 21 vs. Portland State. Fregulia had a game-high five attempts and freshman Mackenzie Magaoay added four.

Sophomore goalkeeper Imani McDonald (1-2-0) earned her first win of the year and made a season-best four saves.

Long Beach State (4-2-1) struck first in the 15th minute with senior Mimi Akaogi driving down the right wing before sending a cross to Fregulia, who scored on a one-timer that hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounced past the goal line. DePaul tied it up at the 38:45 mark, but the Beach reclaimed the lead just over three minutes later when junior Tori Bolden drew a foul in the box. Rangel took the penalty kick and converted, giving LBSU a 2-1 lead at intermission.

The home team kept the momentum on their side after the break as Rangel scored her second goal of the game only 16 seconds into the period. Junior Jessica Vincent delivered a through pass from the top right corner of the 18-yard box to a streaking Rangel, who beat both her defender and the keeper to the ball and finished to the near post. Vincent, who scored the fastest goal by a 49er in program history against Fairfield (Aug. 21), set up Rangel for the fastest second-half goal at the Beach.

Long Beach State increased its cushion to 3-1 at the 62:29 mark. Rodriguez made a nice move near the end line to draw the foul, then stepped up to take the penalty kick where she made the 49ers 2-for-2 on the day.

Conway then tacked on the final score in the 81st minute. Junior Kayla Lombardo lofted a pass across the box where Conway collected the ball and drilled a shot to the near post.

Alexa Ben scored DePaul's (1-4-2) lone goal, while Abby Reed had a team-high four shots.

Long Beach State concludes its eight-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 16, when it welcomes San Diego to George Allen Field for a 7 p.m. showdown. The Beach will then head to No. 9 UCLA for its first road game of the year on Sunday, Sept. 18.
