Missouri State men defeat Creighton

September 20, 2009
The Missouri State men’s soccer team (3-1-1, 1-0-0) used a goal by sophomore Jordan Hoffman in the final minute of the first half to knock off No. 6 Creighton (1-1-1, 0-1-0) on the road today.

Hoffman buried a header off a corner kick by senior Johannes Demarzi in the 45th minute to give Missouri State a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.  The goal was Hoffman’s first of the season and the first of his career.  Demarzi’s assist moves him into the team lead for points this season with seven, after he tallied a goal and two assists earlier this week.

Hoffman had two of the Bears four shots in the match.  Ryan Hennessy and Thomas Vania each added a shot for Missouri State.

Missouri State goalkeeper Alex Riggs only had to make one save to preserve the win and his third consecutive shutout.  The Bears defense only allowed one shot after halftime and eight total for the match.

“It was a great effort on the road by our guys,” said head coach Jon Leamy.  “We had a lot of guys contribute to this win and they defended well as a team.  The atmosphere was great for our guys to play in and they stayed organized throughout the match.”

Missouri State will resume non-conference play as it travels to Dallas, Texas, next Friday and Sunday for the SMU Tournament.  The Bears will face Houston Baptist at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and host SMU at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Westcott Field.  Missouri State returns home on Thursday, October 1 to face Denver at 4:00 p.m.
