Missouri State men draw with SIUE

November 8, 2010
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men's soccer team (7-6-3, 4-1-2) ended their regular season with their third draw of the year with their 0-0 score against SIU Edwardsville (9-6-3, 4-1-2).  However, the Bears still finished the season undefeated at home and only one loss in conference play.

The first half of the game consisted of the Bears and the Cougars trading shots and fighting for ball control up and down the field.  The second half saw the rejuvenated Bears pick of the pace.  The game was very physical in the first half, but the second half was a battlefield.  SIUE picked up a yellow card mid-way through the first-half (21:36), and added two more yellows (49:45, 73:26) in the second.  A red card was given to SIUE's Nash Maduekwe after a very hard tackle to MSU junior David Buckenheimer in the 57th minute.  Buckenheimer was escorted off the field, but later returned.  This gave the Bears ample opportunity to score, as they had a one-man advantage the rest of the way.

Missouri State shot often throughout the game, notching 23 total shots; ten of which were on goal. Junior Heath Melugin was a force on the offensive end, tallying ten shots; five on goal.  Though the Bears had their chances, they were unable to score.  Missouri State outshot SIUE, 23-8.

Though the game did not result in a victory, senior keeper Alex Riggs earned his eighth shutout of the season, moving him into first-place in the Valley this season.

The game was also the Living Our Legacy Game.  Military personnel were honored during the game.  The attendance for the game was 2,027, the second-largest crowd in Missouri State history.

The Bears are now the three seed in the State Farm MVC Championship in Peoria, Ill.  The first game will be the #3 Bears against the #6 Evansville Purple Aces on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.  Missouri State defeated Evansville 3-0 in their first contest this season.
