MONMOUTH WOMEN'S SOCCER TOPS SAINT PETER'S 3-1 FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

September 11, 2011
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team recorded its third straight victory on Sunday afternoon, posting a 3-1 victory at Saint Peter's, as sophomore Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan) notched a pair of goals for the Hawks.

Monmouth, now 3-3 on the season, outscored its opponents 11-2 on the week, after being shutout in its first three matches.

"We have had a very good week on the attacking side of the game," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "To score 11 goals in three matches is terrific."

Monmouth opened the scoring against the in-state rival Peahens in the 20th minute, when Plescia fired a shot from inside the box, past SPC netminder Caitlin Hoffer.

Leading by a goal at the intermission, the Hawks doubled their lead on Plescia's second marker of the match, and third of the season, just 26 seconds into the second half. Plescia, who tallied her first career goal against NJIT on Monday, made the score 2-0 off freshman Jill Root's (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) cross.

The Hawks extended their lead to 3-0 in 65th minute on senior Courtney Snyder's (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) tally, her second of the campaign.

Saint Peter's climbed within 3-1 in the 78th minute on Natalia Carvalho's goal.

Monmouth outshot the Peahens 21-9 in the match, forcing Hoffer to make 13 saves in goal for SPC. Junior Ally Mancino (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery [UConn]) started the contest for the Hawks, making two saves in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold [Providence]), who surrendered the lone tally, made four saves.

The Blue and White, which fired a season-high 21 shots, had 16 on frame in the game, led by Plescia's six shots. Snyder added four shots, while sophomore Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and freshman Carly Yost (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) contributed three attempts apiece.

Monmouth returns to action on September 19, when the Hawks travel to Annapolis, Md., for a non-conference match at Navy, at 6:00 p.m.
