Mount Falls to George Washington in Opener

Washington (August 22, 2014) – In the first action of the 2014 season, the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team was handed a 6-0 road loss at George Washington on Friday evening. The Colonials scored three goals in both halves to earn the victory.

Freshman forward Jordan Fine paced the offense for Mount St. Mary's (0-1) with a pair of shots in her collegiate debut. For the Colonials (1-0), six different players found the back of the net with Brittany Cooper, Kristi Abbate, Meg Murphy, MacKenzie Cowley, Camille Roberts and Kyla Ridley all tallying goals.

In goal, junior Vicky Cocozza registered four first-half saves before fellow junior Rachel Bourne picked up two saves in the final 45 minutes. GW's Miranda Horn made three saves in the first 60:35 of the game to earn the win with Ellen Conway making one save the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.

Ridley got the Colonials' offense rolling with a goal in the seventh minute before Abatte and Cowley netted goals in the 28th and 30th minutes, respectively, to grow the lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.

At the 64:22 mark, Murphy's header off an Annika Johnson corner made it 4-0 in favor of the home side. Nearly 20 minutes later, Cooper and Roberts scored within two minutes of each other in the 85th and 87th minutes to put the game away.

The Mount was able to put four of its five shots on target, while GW took 27 shots with 12 on goal.

Next on the schedule, the Mount plays another road match at Temple on Sunday, Aug. 24, beginning at 3 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The Mount is now 4-19 in season opening games, including a 3-5 mark under Head Coach Tom Gosselin… The Mount's all-time record versus George Washington slips to 0-3-1.
