Mount Olive defeats Tornado in overtime
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men’s soccer team was unable to secure a win on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 in overtime to Mount Olive College and receiving the No. 7 seed to the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
Mount Olive’s John Sonnendecker scored the game-winner, his first goal of the season, in the 93rd minute. Bright Eto, who scored the Trojans’ first goal of the match, received a pass at about the penalty spot that he touched to Sonnendecker. He placed the ball into the lower right corner of the net to give the Trojans the victory.
The Tornado battled back from a 2-1 deficit after taking the lead early in the contest. In the 54th minute, Eli Carrasco took a free kick from the left side of the box that Kendale Liburd headed back to Thomas Dube. Dube connected while the ball was still in the air, sending a blistering shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Chris Hicks gave the Tornado a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the contest. He took a shot from 15 yards away that clipped a defender’s back and was redirected back toward the goal. The keeper dove, but the ball deflected off the inside edge of the post and into the net for Hicks’ third goal in 2013.
The teams were only able to manage a combined nine shots on goal, while the goalkeepers made four saves and allowed five goals. King led the Trojans 14-10 in total shots and were awarded six corner kicks to just one for Mount Olive.
By virtue of today’s loss and Belmont Abbey’s 4-2 win over North Greenville, the Tornado earned the seventh seed despite finishing in a three-way tie for fifth place with Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey in the overall conference standings. King will travel to No. 2 seed Limestone for a 2:00 p.m. match on Tuesday in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
