September 8, 2010
Emmitsburg, Md. (September 7, 2010)--Freshman Keriann McGettigan (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) scored on a header in the 24th minute to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 1-0 win over Towson on Tuesday night at Waldron Family Stadium. It was the Mount's first win against the Tigers since 1995.
After Towson (2-2-1) carried play throughout the first part of the opening half, the Mount earned a corner kick in the 24th minute. Senior Kaitlyn Chambers (Knowlton, N.J./Notre Dame) took the corner and hit a perfect ball to the middle of the penalty box where McGettigan drilled a header into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
From there, the Mount (2-2-1) defense held strong, keeping Towson off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made three saves in recording her second shutout of the year and sixth of her career. Defenders Andrea Bujacich (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Kate Murphy (Vienna, Va./Madison) played strong in the back for the Mount as well.
The Mount has allowed just three goals in five games this season, posting shutouts in two of the past three games. Miller, who has played in goal in each of the five contests, has a 0.57 goals against average and a .833 save percentage on the year.
The Mount had a chance to add to the lead in the second half when freshman Jackie Corley (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) drew a penalty in the box to give the Mountaineers a penalty kick. Towson was able to stay within striking range when sophomore Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) shot just high as she was trying for the upper right corner on the penalty kick.
Towson held a 12-to-6 advantage in shots in the game and a 6-to-2 margin in corner kicks.
Towson now holds a 13-to-2 advantage in the all-time series that began in 1992. Towson had won 10 consecutive matchups since the Mount's last win in the series, a 1-0 victory on October 24, 1995.
