Mountain Hawks look to bounce back this weekend at Quinnipiac, NJIT

September 15, 2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s soccer team will continue on its five-game road swing at Quinnipiac and NJIT this weekend. The Mountain Hawks will first hit the road at Quinnipiac on Friday (4 p.m.), followed by a 1 p.m. kickoff at NJIT Sunday. Lehigh looks to bounce back from a pair of close 2-1 losses last weekend, which brought its overall record to 1-2-1.

Entering last weekend with a 1-0-1 mark, the Mountain Hawks first dropped a tough 2-1 final against Monmouth on Friday to snap their 10-game home winning streak dating back to 2009. Junior Isabelle Li tied the score at one late in the second half, but Monmouth responded only 32 seconds later to retake the lead. It marked Li’s second goal of the season to lead the team.

Despite a furious comeback attempt, Lehigh also suffered a similar 2-1 loss at Marist on Sunday. Junior Hannah Cochran scored her first-career goal in the 81st minute to cut the Red Foxes’ lead in half, but sophomore Murphee Greeley’s last ditch shot on goal in the 89th minute was stopped by Marist goalkeeper Andrea Wicks, ending any hope of forcing overtime.

Quinnipiac enters the weekend with an 0-3-1 record, losing three straight after a season-opening tie against Canisius. Bobcats’ forward Furtuna Velaj was recently recognized on ESPN.com as one of the top offensive players in the nation; she’s scored both Quinnipiac goals while Shauna Edwards has recorded an assist. Senior goalkeeper Jill Kelley has played in all four games thus far, with a 1.42 GAA and a .769 save percentage.

Friday will mark Lehigh’s seventh all-time meeting with Quinnipiac, with the Mountain Hawks winning each of the first six. Last season, Lehigh managed a 3-2 win against the Bobcats at home, led by Liz Carlos’ hat trick.

Lehigh will then head to NJIT on Sunday for its second-ever meeting with the Highlanders; last season, the Mountain Hawks posted an impressive 6-0 win. NJIT currently stands at 0-6, falling to Iona, Wagner, Rider, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson and Lafayette. Kylie Jones and Ukaegbu Gechi have each scored a goal this season while Cielianna Pasiciel and Megan Dellavalle have managed one assist apiece. Anna Kornmuller has started all six games in goal, posting a 2.50 GAA and .674 save percentage.

The Mountain Hawks will continue their road swing when they play at Saint Joseph’s next Friday (Sept. 23), followed by a showdown at La Salle next Sunday (Sept. 25) in their final game before opening Patriot League play.
