Mullo’s Free Kicks Lift Yale Past Cornell 2-1

October 15, 2011
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Twice a week, Enma Mullo can be found at Reese Stadium practicing her free kicks. She spends an hour or so and probably takes 150 each time. All that hard work sure paid off on Saturday against Cornell. Mullo scored two goals, both on free kicks. The second one came 7 minutes, 40 seconds into overtime to lift Yale to a much-needed 2-1 Ivy League victory. “The winner was from exactly the same spot she practices from,” said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. Mullo’s goal ended what nearly became a very frustrating day for the Bulldogs, who outshot Cornell 24-10 but found themselves locked in an overtime battle. “That’s what I really like about this team. We keep fighting,” Meredith said. The victory keeps Yale (7-4-2, 3-1 Ivy) one point behind first-place Harvard in the Ivy League standings. The Crimson edged Brown 2-1 on Saturday. Early on, it looked like the Bulldogs might cruise to victory. Mullo’s first goal came at 21:37 and was from a difficult angle just outside the box. Yale had a number of excellent opportunities to increase the lead, but Cornell goalkeeper Megan Bartlett was outstanding. She made three acrobatic saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Cornell, which played Harvard to a 2-2 tie last Saturday, got the equalizer early in the second half when Xandra Hompe fired a shot inside the near post from 16 yards out. Hompe nearly gave the Big Red (3-10-1, 0-3-1 Ivy) the lead 10 minutes later, but her shot from in front deflected off the crossbar. The Bulldogs dominated the rest of the way but couldn’t end it in regulation. Finally late in the first overtime, Cornell was whistled for a foul just outside the box. Mullo stepped up and drilled a high shot just inside the post to set off a wild celebration on the Yale sideline. Freshman goalkeeper Elise Wilcox made two saves to earn the victory for the Bulldogs. “I thought our defense did a good job,” Meredith said. “Cornell is a very gutsy and scrappy team, which is a credit to their coach.” The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday at Penn. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
