Navy Kicks Off 2013 Season Against N.C State

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - No better way to kick off the 2013 season than with two matches at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Navy women's soccer squad will host ACC foe North Carolina State on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:00 p.m. then the Mids will wrap-up the weekend with a match against the Citadel on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Video of Friday's Navy-N.C. State game will be available for free on the Patriot League Digital Network with Joe Miller on the call. Live statistics will be available for both contests.

Full Steam Ahead
• Navy is primed for another chance to win the Patriot League Title. The Midshipmen return nine starters and 17 total letterwinners from the 2012 season.
• Navy's leading goal scorer from last season, senior forward Ashlynn Soellner, returns on the attacking end. Soelnner paced the Mids with 29 points on 10 goals and 9 assists in 2012.
• The Patriot League recognized the Midshipmen were ready to challenge for the title, placing three Mids on the 2013 preseason team, Soellner, Elizabeth Hoerner and Jade Seabrook. Seabrook was also named the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

All-Around Performer
Having played just three games before her junior year, goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner's junior campaign put the spotlight on her for the upcoming senior season. The Lititz, Pa. native has been placed on three different preseason honors and was named the team's captain for 2013.
• Hoerner's 1.06 goals against average, .808 save percentage, four shutouts and a 17-2-1 record in 2012 not only garnered her a spot on the 2013 Patriot League Preseason Team, but is being watched as one of 31 potential candidates in all of Division 1 women's soccer for the MAC Hermann Trophy this season.
• The senior goalkeeper has excelled at a high level in the classroom, having accrued a 3.86 GPA as an Honors Oceanography major. She has been named to the Superintendent's List five times and the Commandant's List six times. She ranks second among her 1,098 classmates in Military Order of Merit and is 61st in Overall Order of Merit. Her performance in the classroom, on the field, her character as a team captain and community service has placed her as one of 30 worthy candidates in Division I women's soccer for the 2013 senior CLASS award.

Dynamic Defender
• Along with her teammate Hoerner, junior defender Jade Seabrook has placed on the big stage following a terrific 2012 campaign as a full-time starter. Seabrook started in 20 games, tallying eight points on two goals and four assists. She also anchored a Navy backline that blanked nine opponents.
• The St. Paris, Ohio native has been placed on the 2013 Patriot League Preseason Team, MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and was named the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Patriot League Preseason Poll
Following a tough loss in the Patriot League Championship game, Navy has been predicted to finish second this season. Newcomer, Boston University, is the overwhelming favorite to win the regular season, having tallied 12 of the 20 first-place votes.

Scouting North Carolina State
• N.C. State leads the all-time series against Navy, 2-0 and N.C. State defeated Navy in 2011, 1-0. This will be the first time that the Midshipmen host the Wolfpack in the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
• Before opening the regular season against Navy, N.C. State played a warm-up exhibition game against North Carolina-Greensboro. The Wolfpack fell to the Spartans, 3-2, with goals from Kaley Shlaes and Shelli Spamer.
• N.C. State posted a disappointing 5-14-0 overall record and 0-10-0 in conference play last season.
• The Wolfpack return nine starters, including their top two goal scorers in Jennie Krauser (5g,2a) and Brittany Stanko (5g,0a).
• N.C. State will look to first-year head coach Tim Santoro, previously the Associate Head Coach for nationally-ranked Wake Forest, to the right the ship in 2013.

Scouting the Citadel
• The Citadel finished the 2012 season 5-12-1 and is predicted to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the Southern Conference Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs open the season on the road against No. 17 Maryland on Friday, Aug. 23.
• The Bulldogs return senior forward Mariana Garcia, who led the team with 14 goals in 2012. Garcia was an All-Southern Conference First team honoree in 2012.
• Navy leads the all-time series against the Citadel, 2-0. It took two overtimes in 2011 for the Midshipmen to take care off business against the Bulldogs in a 2-1 win.

Up Next
Navy will wrap-up its three-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 30 against North Florida. Then the Midshipmen will hit the road for the first time against in-state opponent, No. 17 Maryland, on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Ludwig Field.

Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for $5 and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting one hour before each game and will continue running throughout the game and for one hour after.
